What kind of equitation do you do? Which discipline do you practice ?
I believe that the foundation for all disciplines is the same and that the goal of all horsemanship is the same, it is just the process in between that varies. Above all our approach is down to earth with a large dose of common sense.
Whether you are flying over show jumps, dancing in the dressage arena of just out for a hack we all want to feel harmoniously united with our horse. It is the fulfilling of this basic human need for connection and love that makes horsemanship such an enjoyable pastime.
So we choose the style that suits us most, we can buy a suitable horse, all the outfits, tack and gear that go along with our chosen specialty – that is the easy part and just comes down to money. But the more important stuff lies behind. It is the tact of the hands that hold the reins that matters, not the kind of bit, bridle or halter that the horse wears. It is connecting from the heart that makes all the difference to the horse, not what kind of saddle he wears or doesn’t wear.
To learn this equestrian tact is to embark on a fascinating and challenging journey that will resonate through our whole lives. Our work with horses reflects exactly the areas we can develop further as human beings, our relating to them mirrors how we relate to people. So it is a personal thing which we will each experience in our own unique way. The rewards are immense as we make real connections with horses so allow ourselves to mirror all their wonderful qualities. This grace, beauty, power, sensitivity and natural vitality will transform our beings. It has nothing to do with exams, diplomas or stages which focus on the intellectual mind. Rather it belong to the realm of the heart, the soul, the intuition, our true nature, the heart mind however you see it.
It is simply the meeting of 2 beings leading to an authentic and total connection.
So back to our original question – the equitation we do here will serve you well whatever discipline you are into.
My experience has been in Show Jumping, Eventing, Dressage, Exhibitions and Shows of Classical Equitation and even some time in the world of Western and Rodeo riding but as I have said it is the naturalness of the human that make it all possible.
Equitation, well done, varies little in its essence, it is the superficial stuff that is different . Especially the initial training of a youngster is the same whatever school he will go onto.
Can i get over my fear of horses and riding ?
Yes you can ! Or at least find out how to make the fear your friend so it doesn't get in the way of your fun.
With a relaxing atmosphere and trustworthy, common sense, down to earth instruction. It may take more than a few days so the first thing is to be patient with yourself, be kind to yourself and enjoy a journey of exploration through your comfort zone and beyond !
Fear of horses and riding is a very common thing. Many people say to me, “oh I love horses, but from a distance !”. When they take up my challenge to get them feeling comfortable, even joyful in the presence of a horse they find an energizing, rejuvenating process with benefits that resonate through all areas of life.
For those with fear of horses who have no intension of getting any closer to them , the exercise of doing just that is wonderful path into personal development. In fact the more fear a person has the more dramatic will be the change in them as a result of safely and gentle working with that fear of horses.
Others may wonder why bother ? If horses cause a person fear and distress why not just stop riding? Anyone who has connected with horses knows very well that the rewards by far outweigh the negatives. In fact many who ride have issues with fears, often going un-noticed by others and ignored by their owner. That fear can build up to a level that overtakes the enjoyment or an unpleasant incident can tip the balance. There is no shame in being afraid, rather be proud you have the courage to face up to it and do something positive about it.
The fear can be based in an actual experience of being in or involved with an accident or even witnessing a traumatic event or it can be the mind inventing all possible outcomes involving painful experiences. Here the old saying “ your mind is your tool, you are not it’s slave “ is very relevant. Why sabotage our own freedom and enjoyment ? Of course in practice it is not that simple. That is why we have developed our courses to help and support by you in your journey by
- providing a safe atmosphere where you can work with your fear in a non-judgmental way
- using instructors and horses who will make you feel at ease in your trust
- taking it step by step and honoring each step along the way
- helping you recognize your inborn ability to understand the language of horses so you know how they are feeling
- creating awareness of your physical responses to the fear and how to process them
- showing you how to tell the difference between good and bad risks, after all fear is there to protect us, up to a point
I would love to talk to you about how your own fears are holding you back and the difference it would make in your life if they were removed. We can create a program to guide you on that journey. Send an e-mail to infoiveandbreathehorses.com to arrange your chat over skype or telephone - I look forward to hearing from you !
